Carlos Noronha Feio
3, 2, 1, 0 - A A And Away - 1, 2....
Rugs, Video and Installations
The Allsop Gallery
29th January - 12th March
Carlos' work is engaged with the points at which geography and migration meet, where different cultures collide, intertwine or impose their imperatives on each other. He represents these concerns from the personal perspective of his own nationality, weaving his identity with the cultures of the places and histories he encounters internationally.
As in several other works, Carlos Noronha Feio has used Afghan war rugs as a starting point for '...3 2 1 A, A AND AWAY 1 2 ...'

Rugs that record history and folklore have a long tradition in Afghanistan. When Soviet tanks arrived in 1979, there was already some awareness of the existence of war rugs, but the invasion intensified their production bringing them to the attention of the collecting public in the west.
With designs drawing on the symbolism used in the Afghan tradition, Carlos Noronha Feio’s rugs are made by traditional carpet makers from the Casa dos Tapetes in Arraiolos, Portugal. This region has been making rugs for over a millennium. It had been an Arab province for many centuries and the influence remains strong. This represents a meeting point between Carlos' own cultural background and that of Afghanistan.
The title '...3 2 1 A, A AND AWAY 1 2...' evokes the idea of space exploration. Reflecting on his voyages, on trade and the connections he was exploring whilst making the work prompted a simple question; ' If we found a new world, pure and simple, what would we export from ours?
The exhibition features his latest work funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
